Why NicheIndex Exists

Choosing a newsletter niche should not require 20 hours of manual research.

The Problem: Niche Selection Is Guesswork

Every newsletter guide says the same thing: “Pick a niche you are passionate about.” That advice ignores the question that actually determines success: is there an audience for this niche, and how many other creators are already serving it?

Without data, creators either pick overly broad topics (where they drown in competition) or overly narrow ones (where there are not enough readers). The result is months of writing into a void, wondering why growth has stalled.

Before NicheIndex, answering these questions required opening dozens of browser tabs, manually counting publications, estimating subscriber numbers, and building a spreadsheet from scratch. It took 15 to 20 hours of tedious work, and the result was still incomplete.

The Solution: Data-Driven Niche Research

NicheIndex replaces guesswork with evidence. We index 16,610 publications across 27 topics with data updated daily. Every day, we refresh subscriber counts, pricing tiers, category assignments, and publication metadata.

Instead of manually researching one niche at a time, you can compare all 30 side by side. See where subscriber demand is high but paid competition is low. Identify niches where readers already pay for newsletters but few creators have entered. Find the gaps before everyone else notices.

What is the Opportunity Score?

The Opportunity Score is a 0 to 100 composite metric that answers one question: how accessible is this niche for a new newsletter creator?

It combines three signals: subscriber demand (how many readers exist in the category), supply gap (how few paid competitors exist), and monetization gap (what percentage of newsletters are free-only, suggesting room for paid content).

Higher scores mean more readers and fewer paid competitors. A score above 70 signals strong opportunity. Between 40 and 70 is moderate. Below 40 indicates a crowded or low-demand niche.
